This is the regular Runecrafting guide, the guide for ironman / hardcore ironman players can be found here.
Runecrafting is a skill that allows players to craft their own runes for Magic spells. The experience earned from making runes is small, making Runecrafting a very slow skill to train. It is a very click intensive skill to train.

Getting the Supplies
In order to craft Runes, you require Rune Essence, you can obtain essence by either buying it from the Runecrafting store, mining it in the Essence Mine or killing Abyssal Guardians in the Abyss.
To get to the Runecrafting Store, First you will need to teleport to Neitiznot. You can do this by clicking on the world map and then scroll down in the city teles to Neitiznot, or by clicking the Skilling teleport and then on Runecrafting - Neitiznot.
Once there, head into the building to the north of the bank, and trade Cassie. You want to buy Pure Essence, as they give a slightly better exp rate.
While buying essence, buy yourself a talisman of the rune you will be making. You should also make yourself a tiara. When you are at the Runecrafting altar use the tiara on it and it will be enchanted.
While wearing an enchanted tiara you will gain 10% more Runecrafting exp for the corresponding rune.
Talismans can be bought from the Mage of Zamorak inside the Guthix Altar. To get to the Guthix Altar speak to the Mage of Zamorak At South Neitiznot.
Players can now mine their own essence. To teleport to the essence mine, speak to the Mage of Zamorak at south Neitiznot and ask him to teleport you there.
Non donators will mine rune Essence.
Donators will mine Pure Essence.
The Abyssal Rift is an area in which you can kill Abyssal creatures for:
- Pouches (Small to Large)
- Clue Scrolls (Medium)
- Abyssal Charms (Abyssal charms are used to infuse Abyssal Parasite, Abyssal Lurker and Abyssal Titan pouches.)
The Abyssal Rift is also the interface that teleports you to all Altars. Read more about that below.
Pouches can be bought from the Mage of Zamorak from various amountof Runecrafting Points or looted from Abysall Guardians, except the Massive pouch which can only be got by purchasing it from the Mage of Zamorak.
Pouches hold a limited amount of any type of essence:
- Small: 3
- Medium: 9
- Large: 18
- Giant: 30
- Massive: 48
Pouches will last a limited number of essences before degrading and needing to be repaired.
The Dark Mage who is located in the centre of the Abysall Rift can repair your degraded pouches for a small fee.
The Dark Mage will repair broken pouches for a cost:
- Medium: 50k
- Large: 100K
- Giant: 200K
- Massive: 300K
Super Donators have 20% off.
Extreme Donators have 50% off.
The Wicked Set consits of 4 pieces:
Wicked Robe Top
Each piece costs 1300 Runecrafting Points while the Wicked Hood costs 5000 Runecrafting Points.
Each wicked set piece, when equipped, increases rune and experience multiplier by 25%, meaning that full set will double the crafted runes and experience received.
The wicked hood is one of the most useful items, beside the 25% rune and experience multiplier provided like all other pieces, it can be used to teleport players to altars or remotely craft runes.
The Wicked hood has has a limited amount of charges per day.
Regular Players: 15
Donators - 20
Super Donators - 25
Extreme Donators - 50
The Wicked Hood also provides unlimited teleports to the Guthix Altar, the Essence mine and the Abyss.
Theres are 3 different types of Abyssal Familars, each of which can hold some essence for you.
Abyssal Parasite - Holds 7 essences
Abyssal Lurker - Holds 12 essences
Abyssal Titan - Holds 20 essences
After you have bought an adequate amount of essence , it's time to start Runecrafting. Teleport to South Neitiznot using your Neitiznot teleports.
The next step is to talk to the Mage of Zamorak who is close to where you teleport in. Once you have found the Mage of Zamorak, you can choose to teleport to the Guthix Altar, the Essence Mine or the Abyss.
Training at the Guthix Altar
If you choose to train Runecrafting at the Guthix Altar, you need to buy talismans from the Mage of Zamorak and charge the pillars sorrounding the Altar. You can do so by using a talisman of the type of rune you want to create on the pillars. Note, you can use up to 4 different types of talismans to create 4 different types of runes. Pillar charges are temporary and will require you to recharge them by using another talisman on them.
You can check the integrity of the pillar and also remove that talisman by right clicking the pillar.
While training at the Guthx Alatr you will earn Runecrafting Points. You will earn one Runecrafint Point per essence crafted. You can view your current Runecrafting Points and your total Runecrafting score in the top left of your screen while inside the Guthix Altar.
Runecrafting Points can be used to buy 'Wicked' set pieces and also Runecrafting Pouches. To access the Runecrafting store, trade the Mage of Zamorak at South Neitiznot.
As you can see, you can also view your current Runecrafting Points in the bottom left of the store.
If you choose to train Runecrafting at the Guthix Altar you should ask the Mage of Zamorak to hold some Essence for you seeing as there is no bank inside the Guthix Altar.
The Mage of Zamorak will hold different amounts, depending on the type of your account.
- Regular Players: 300
- Donators - 400
- Super Donators - 500
- Extreme Donators - 1000
To get the Mage of Zamorak to hold your essence, speak to him at South Neitiznot with noted essence in your inventory.
To get your essence back, simply talk to him again. If you have pouches in your inventory, the essence will automatically fill into these.
Training with Wicked hood
Another valuable method is training Runecrafting by using the Wicked hood. It is best used by players with the Extreme Donator rank since they can craft runes from pouches. It is suggested to have all pouches up to large pouch unlocked before using this method. I also suggest changing your spellbook to "Modern spellbook" since the teleportation with this spellbook is the fastest. In order to start training make sure the Mage of Zamorak is holding enough essence.
Select the first option "Could you please hold some essences?".
You have now successfully stored your essence.
The Mage of Zamorak can hold different amount of essence depending on your Donator rank.
- Regular: 300
- Donator: 400
- Super Donator: 500
- Extreme Donator: 1000
Now simply right click the Mage of Zamorak.
Select the first option "Teleport to Guthix Altar".
Once arrived at the Guthix Altar right click the Mage of Zamorak and choose the option "Return Essence".
When your inventory is filled simply right click the Mage and select "Teleport".
Once you are outside of the Guthix Altar you can craft runes with the Wicked hood. To do so open your equipment tab and right click the Wicked hood and select "operate".
An interface will open where you can choose the rune you want to craft or the altar you want to teleport to.
To craft from your Wicked hood right click the rune you wish to craft and choose the first option "Craft".
You can use the Mage of Zamorak in Neitiznot to teleport yourself to the Guthix Altar to repeat the process. It is advised to have some noted essence in your inventory to quickly store essence at the Mage of Zamorak.
Greater Runic Staff
When equipped, the staff will hold the mined essences as pure essences automatically, and those essences can be withdrawn from the staff as notes when player is outside the essence mine.
The staff will hold pure essences even to NON donators. The limit of essences that the staff can hold are the following:
- Regular: 300
- Donator: 400
- Super Donator: 500
- Extreme Donator: 1000
Greater Runic Staff can be used on noted talismans to unote it.
Altars teleport tab
Breaking an altar teleport tab will teleport you to the altar.
Training at normal rune altars
Once you have been teleported into the Abyss, you need to make your way though the obsticles before you can choose which altar you wish to go to. To get through the obsticles you need to have the appropriate tools in your inventory.
When you get past the obsticles you can then choose which altar you wish to train at.
Once at the Altar of your choice, simply left click the altar and craft runes.
Tip: holding down CTRL and click on the Essence in your bank will withdraw a full inventory with one click.
The amount of experience you gain increases as you unlock the ability to craft more and more runes per rune essence. Below you'll see the experience you get from crafting air runes at the guthix altar with 4 air talismans up.
|Level||XP per Rune essence||XP per Pure essence|
|1||850 xp||900 xp|
|11||1.100 xp||1.200 xp|
|22||1.350 xp||1.500 xp|
|33||1.600 xp||1.800 xp|
|44||1.850 xp||2.100 xp|
|55||2.100 xp||2.400 xp|
|66||2.350 xp||2.700 xp|
|77||2.600 xp||3.000 xp|
|88||2.850 xp||3.300 xp|
|99||1.550 xp||1.800 xp|
Note: When you reach level 99, xp will get reduced by half.
Below is a table which shows which level you need to make multiple runes per rune essence for every rune type.
Note: This table is for crafting at the elements altar, NOT GUTHIX ALTAR.
